Apple Juice, Coffee Creamer, and More Pulled From Shelves This Week

There were five major recalls this week, affecting a variety of foods and brands.

Martinelli’s apple juice was given the second-highest risk level for patulin contamination, and enoki mushrooms were pulled from shelves over Listeria concerns.

Foreign object contamination affected products from two major grocery stores. Costco salsa may contain pieces of wood, and a pork carnitas product from Aldi may have fragments of metal.

Lastly, coffee creamer made by Momo Tea Inc. was recalled over an undeclared allergen. The non-dairy coffee creamer actually contains milk.

Check your pantries and fridges for the following products.

S. Martinelli & Co. has voluntarily recalled over 170,000 bottles of apple juice sold in 28 states. The brand’s signature round glass bottles may be contaminated with patulin, a mycotoxin produced by molds that can grow on apples.

The recall was initiated on March 18, and on Tuesday, the FDA gave the recall the second-highest risk level. Drinking apple juice contaminated with patulin can cause nausea, vomiting, and cellular damage.

The FDA did not provide specific instructions for consumers who have the recalled apple juice. As a class II recall, the safest option is not to drink the affected apple juice and to discard it.

On Saturday, the USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) issued a public health alert for pork carnitas products sold at Aldi stores nationwide due to potential foreign material contamination.

Routine equipment checks found damage that may have contaminated the carnitas products with pieces of metal. There have been no reports of injuries in connection to the affected products, which were produced by Cargill Meat Solutions.

FSIS did not officially recall the products because they are no longer available for sale, but the agency issued a health alert since the pork carnitas may still be in fridges or freezers. FSIS is urging consumers to throw away the affected products or return them to the store.
